Helping others is my fulfillment - Janice Steele

Ever since I was a little girl I knew I wanted to be a nurse and help people. I began my career as a brand new registered nurse in the burn unit at a level one trauma center, TGH. I felt it was my calling especially with regards to the pediatric burn patients.  This was not only an emotional and physical challenge daily but it was also extremely rewarding to be able to help these fragile and extremely compromised  patients. I had some experiences which truly shaped who I am today as well as my career path. I soon realized I needed to pursue my masters degree as I wanted to become a nurse practitioner to be able to do even more.  

 

Once I received my masters degree I created a position the first nurse practitioner in an ABA certified burn unit in the United States. I spent 13 years in the burn unit and have to say it was truly my calling at the time. However once I started having children of my own my focus changed and treating pediatric burns became more and more mentally challenging, especially when my own son became critically ill and had to undergo heart surgery at three months of age.  I ended up changing jobs just to be able to be more present for my children and I worked for the VA with our nations veterans. The experience in the burn unit working with some of the most world renowned plastic surgeons and learning the in-depth anatomy and physiology of the largest organ of our body the skin was knowledge I could have never gained with any education other than living and doing it.  I have written several chapters on pathophysiology of the skin as well as multiple journal articles and again I thank  my invaluable experiences.  I realize now as I’m much older and 20 years later after leaving the burn unit that I still love my career as a nurse practitioner and now work with our nation’s heroes in the VA in Urology, and I still thrive on helping others.

I decided to start my own company, Steele Young Wellness focusing on wellness, prevention of illness, healthy aging and most importantly, helping clients achieve their best health overall.
